For this reading we were asked to read and respond to three news articles regarding employer and college degrees.
the first article "The Job Market: Is a College Degree Worth Less?" stressed that a bachelors degree is not what it used to be. it is still a valuable tool and essential to a lot of jobs but it is not enough to guarantee your employment anymore. in todays work world you need experience to really stand out among your competing applicants and a masters degree wouldn't be a bad idea to have either. this was interesting to me because i knew that more and more students were attending college but i never thought that it would have such of an impact on the workforce. the next article "Should More People Skip College?" this article suggests that there are many increasing jobs that do not require a degree but if you get the job then employers tend to pay more if you have a degree then not because the find you more desirable. even if your degree is in some other field you will still get a better look then others. this is kind of crazy if you think about it. it can easily be adding to the idea we "need" college making our over population of college graduates more prominent. the next article "Plan B: Skip College" took a comparative approach and made a better case. it said how the lower graded graduates of high school will attempt a college degree but %80 never finish so they end up paying large amounts of debt with out ever receiving a degree. i feel that for these individuals high school educators should open other avenues that may better suit the student such as a work program in school or trade school. it also expressed how some jobs will always want a graduate degree in fields such as medical.
